Songs of African-American Composer Florence Price Highlighted for IWD 2024 Event 3rd Annual International Women’s Day Concert in Oak Park Featuring Works of Women in the Arts
Award-winning female singers are centerstage for the 2024 International Women’s Day (IWD) concert. Bellissima Opera and Song’s 3rd Annual IWD Extravaganza will be presented at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2024, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Oak Park.
Amplifying IWD’s 2024 Theme, “Inspire Inclusion”, the concert features songs of celebrated African-American composer Florence Price, who has deep Chicago roots.
Other highlights will include a world premiere arrangement by Elizabeth Doyle of Amanda McBroom’s The Rose, Brahms‘ beloved Liebeslieder Waltzes, and rarely heard works by female poets, librettists and composers.
Singers Kimberly Jones, Janet Mensen Reynolds, Alison Meuth, and Christine Steyer are joined by collaborative pianists Jennifer McCabe and Sarah Yoon-Mayer.
Special guests will be poet Maureen Kwiat Meshenberg and singer Dayanara Fernandez. The concert will be emceed by Ava Logan and set to a backdrop of images by artist Tamera Gagne.
Concert is 110 minutes with short intermission. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. An on-site reception with artists follows for all attendees. Tickets: bellissima opera.com or at the door if not sold out.

Anita Kallen and Catherine Thomson are thrilled to be debuting a brand new show for Women’s History Month in March. "HERstory: A Century of Songwriting Sisters" celebrates the famous and not-so-famous women who have contributed to Tin Pan Alley, the Great American Songbook, the Broadway canon, and contemporary popular music with songs that span the decades. With music direction by the award-winning Beckie Menzie and percussion by Irwin Berkowitz, they‘ll share songs by composers and lyricists from Carolyn Leigh, Dorothy Fields, and Dana Seusse, to Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Gloria Estefan, among others, along with entertaining stories of how these women became part of the soundtrack of our lives. Best known as the Culture Guy from the original Queer Eye, EMMY Award winner Jai Rodriguez is no stranger to the stage. He was cast as Angel in the Broadway musical RENT at age 18 making him the youngest person cast in a leading role in that show. In 2003, Jai made history as the ‘Culture Vulture’ in the original ‘Queer Eye Fab Five,’ alongside his castmates Ted Allen, Carson Kressley, Kyan Douglas and Thom Filicia. The show, which ultimately shaped American television and cultural representation of the LGBTQ community, lasted from 2003 through 2007 and along the way, picked up both a Primetime Emmy Award and a GLAAD Media Award for ‘Outstanding Reality Program,’ as well nominations from the PGA Awards, People’s Choice Awards and Teen Choice Awards.
Since then, Jai has become a regular fixture in TV and film with roles in such shows as Greys Anatomy, Malibu Country, Bones, The Rookie, Fantasy Island, Uncoupled and BROS to name a few. When he‘s not on set Jai regularly tours with cabaret shows having just played 3 packed nights at the legendary 54 Below in NYC.
